UGC-NET Question Paper Leaked Days Before Test, Sold on Encrypted Platforms: Reports

New Delhi: The questions paper of the recently cancelled UGC-NET exam was leaked 48 hours earlier and sold on the dark web and encrypted social media platforms for ₹6 lakh, according to sources from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Education Ministry already facing criticism over the NEET-UG exam cancelled the UGC-NET based on information from a federal anti-cybercrime unit.

The source of the leak remains unknown. The CBI, collaborating with the National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers various competitive exams, is investigating the incident. The role of coaching centres, where many aspirants prepare for exams like NET, NEET, and IAS, is also under scrutiny. CBI officers may conduct in-person visits to some of these centres.

The CBI on Thursday filed its first FIR against unidentified individuals, following a complaint from the ministry. The complaint suggested that the exam’s integrity might have been compromised. Sources believe a large-scale corruption racket may be involved, prompting a probe into officials responsible for setting the question papers.

The Education Ministry defended its decision to cancel the exam, noting the need to maintain transparency and sanctity in the examination process. Students had raised concerns about potential paper leaks days before the exam but reported no immediate action from authorities. Students at Lucknow University claimed at least one paper had been leaked and sold for a mere ₹5,000 on WhatsApp and Telegram since June 16.

Over 11 lakh students had registered for this exam. The scandal has sparked widespread protests from students and opposition parties.
