Congress Reclaims Allahabad After 4 Decades, Amitabh Bachchan Was Its Last MP

Prayagraj: In a major upset, the Indian National Congress party has regained the prestigious Allahabad Lok Sabha constituency after a gap of nearly 40 years. The last time the Congress won this seat was in 1984 when legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan emerged victorious in the aftermath of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

The Congress candidate, Ujjwal Raman Singh, defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Neeraj Tripathi by a convincing margin of over 58,000 votes. Singh’s victory was part of the INDIA Opposition bloc’s impressive performance in Uttar Pradesh, where it secured 43 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats.

Ujjwal, son of former Samajwadi Party leader Rewati Raman Singh, made a strategic move to Congress earlier this year, capitalizing on the party’s alliance dynamics within the INDIA Opposition bloc.

The historical significance of the Allahabad seat resonates through its political legacy, having been represented by eminent figures including former Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Shastri and VP Singh, along with BJP stalwart Murli Manohar Joshi. Notably, megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s victory in 1984 remains a memorable chapter, securing an overwhelming 68% vote share amidst formidable opposition.
