Bride Cancels Her Wedding for ‘Cheap’ Lehenga from Groom’s Family

A bride of Haldwani area of Uttarakhand denied getting married when the ‘cheap’ lehenga sent by her in-laws did not please her. According to media reports, the would-be bride felt this ‘cheap’ lehenga sent by the groom’s family demeaned the social status of her family as well as her.

According to the prevailing marriage tradition of Uttarakhand, the groom’s father had sent this lehenga to the bride. It is said to be priced around Rs 10,000. The girl expected something more extravagant and costly. The quality of the lehenga also irked her.

She preferred to split up with her fiance from Almora because of this ‘cheap’ lehenga. The girl’s family cancelled the marriage ceremony, which was to be held on November 5. The couple had got engaged in June this year. The cancellation of the marriage led to a tussle between the two families and the matter reached the police.

The groom’s family alleged that their social status was at stake as they had already printed the invitation cards for the marriage. But the girl did not agree to marry. At last with police intervention, the marriage had to be called off.
