Wrestlers’ Protest: Delhi Police Stopped Me From Visiting Protest Site, Arrested Me & My Husband, Claims Geeta Phogat

New Delhi: Wrestler Geeta Phogat on Thursday alleged that the Delhi Police had arrested her and her husband, Pawan Saroha. However, the Delhi police said that the two have been placed in preventive custody rather than being arrested.

Phogat and a number of other wrestlers have been demonstrating at Jantar Mantar in Delhi in support of the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India, who has been charged with sexual harassment.

“Me and my husband Pawan Saroha have been arrested by the Delhi Police. Very sad,” she said in a tweet.

They were en route to Jantar Mantar when the police detained Phogat and her husband at the border.

A few hours before the arrest, Geeta Phogat alleged that she had been prevented by the police from seeing the wrestlers who were staging a protest at Jantar Mantar.

“Arbitrariness of Delhi Police. I was also stopped from visiting my colleagues at Jantar Mantar. The police are saying that there are only two ways: either go home or to the police station. Highly condemnable,” she had tweeted.
