Eminent Writer Bhima Prusty Receives Sarala Puraskar 2023 for ‘Jambuloka’

Bhubaneswar: Bhima Prusty, a renowned writer, was honoured with the prestigious Sarala Puraskar for 2023 in a ceremony held in Bhubaneswar. The award, established by the Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) to recognize outstanding literary achievements, was presented by prominent Marathi writer Dnyaneshwar Mulay. Prusty received this recognition for his exceptional novel ‘Jambuloka,’ along with a copper plaque and a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh.

Additionally, the Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman was bestowed upon veteran painter Guru Benudhar Mahapatra and the famous flutist Guru Mohini Mohan Patnaik. Both recipients received a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a commemorative plaque.

During the event, IMPACT Trustee Paramita Panda highlighted the importance of promoting Odia, considering it’s recognized as a classical language and the sixth oldest language in India. The Sarala Puraskar, initiated four decades ago by Dr. Bansidhar Panda and Ila Panda, aims to encourage Odia literature and support emerging writers. Their dedicated efforts have elevated Odisha’s art and literature to a respectable stature.

Dnyaneshwar Mulay, presenting the award, expressed his deep love for literature and emphasized the role of writing and reading in providing energy and insight into life. He believes that a writer’s evolution can be traced through their writing, making literature an indispensable part of his life.

A panel discussion on contemporary literature took place at the event, featuring Dnyaneshwar Mulay and Bhima Prusty. The discussion was moderated by poet Kedar Mishra, and the occasion also marked the release of the poetry book ‘Rutu Uin Asuchi’ by Dnyaneshwar Mulay, published by ‘Timepass’ and translated by Pravasini Mahakud.

The event, hosted by actress Madhumita Mohanty, included a welcome performance by Adrut Children’s Home. Writers and artists from various parts of the state participated in the event, which was organized with the assistance of Kishore Mohanty, head of IMFA Corporate Affairs, and Saroj Bal, Chief Coordinator of Sarala Sachivalay.
