Maharashtra Bureaucrat’s Son Arrested for Mowing Down Girlfriend

Mumbai: Ashwajit Gaikwad, accused of running over 26-year-old Priya Singh in Maharashtra’s Thane, was arrested on Sunday by the special investigation team (SIT).

Ashawajit is the son of a senior Maharashtra bureaucrat. The SIT seized a Land Rover Defender, allegedly used in the crime.

According to the Thane Police, apart from Ashwajit, his two associates in the crime, Romil Patil and Sagar Shedge, were also taken into custody.

Priya alleged that on December 11, she went to meet Ashwajit. “My boyfriend slapped me, tried to strangle my neck, I tried to push him away. He bit my hand, beat me, pulled my hair and his friend out of nowhere pushed me to the ground,” Priya Singh said on Instagram. She also alleged that Ashwajit asked his driver to run her over. After running over her legs, they fled away from the site, she claimed.

Priya claimed that she was in a relationship with Ashwajit for four-and-a-half years.

Following the complaint by Priya, a case was registered against Ashwajit and two others under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 279 (rash driving) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

Ashwajit and his family refuted all the allegations made by Priya alleging that it was an attempt to “extort money”.
