Unable to Afford School Fee of Children, Woman Ends Life Along With Daughter in Maharashtra

Mumbai: A 26-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide along with her five-year-old daughter by jumping into a well at Malegaon in Nilanga tehsil of central Maharashtra’s Latur district two days ago as she could not afford to send her two children to a CBSE-affiliated school.

An accidental death report was registered at Aurad Shahajani police station regarding the incident on Wednesday.

The deceased were Bhagyashree Venkat Halse (26) and Samiksha Venkat Halse (5).

The woman’s family earned their living by herding goats. According to initial police investigation, Bhagyashree desired to send her son and daughter to a CBSE-affiliated school. But her husband did not have the financial capacity for it.

She was also in a depressed state after losing her mother in 2023.  On Tuesday evening, around 5:30 pm, she along with her daughter went to a well owned by another farmer of the village. From there she made a video call to her husband Venkat Halse, asking him to see the daughter’s face for the last time. Then she and her daughter jumped into the well. Their bodies were retrieved by the police.

The woman had also tried to take her son along with her. But he slipped away and thus escaped death.
