IND vs BAN, 1st Test: Pacers Skittle Bangladesh as India Stretch Lead to 308 on Day 2

Chennai: Bangladesh briefly fought back on the second morning with four quick wickets to bowl India out early, but their batting crumbled against India’s relentless attack. Bangladesh were bundled out for 149 in 47.1 overs in their first innings, with India choosing to bat again despite holding a substantial 227-run lead. By stumps on day two, India had stretched their lead to 308 with seven wickets in hand.

Despite better conditions for batting than on day one, Bangladesh’s batsmen found no respite from India’s bowling. Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj collectively claimed eight wickets, with Ravindra Jadeja breaking the most threatening partnership when the pitch began to ease.

Bangladesh’s brief resurgence began with Taskin Ahmed, who used the second new ball to better effect, while Hasan Mahmud picked up Bangladesh’s first-ever five-wicket haul on Indian soil. However, India’s overnight advantage remained insurmountable, and their fast bowlers immediately took control of Bangladesh’s innings. Bumrah and Deep reduced Bangladesh to 40/5 in no time, with Bumrah dismissing opener Shadman Islam and Deep removing Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque on consecutive deliveries.

After lunch, India’s bowlers continued to press. Siraj sent Najmul Hossain back to the pavilion, while Bumrah scalped Mushfiqur Rahim’s wicket with a stunning delivery. Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan tried to fight back, putting together a 51-run partnership, but India’s spinners kept things tight. Jadeja dismissed Shakib and Litton in quick succession, breaking Bangladesh’s last real hope of recovery.

Bumrah returned to clean up the tail, dismissing Taskin Ahmed with a yorker, while Siraj claimed Nahid Rana to end Bangladesh’s innings.

India’s second innings began aggressively, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma scoring freely. However, Bangladesh bowlers found some success, dismissing Rohit, Jaiswal and  Kohli. By the close of play, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant steadied the innings, guiding India to a commanding position with a lead of over 300.

Brief Scores: India 376 (Ashwin 113, Jadeja 86; Mahmud 5-83, Taskin 3-55) and 81/3 (Gill 33*) lead Bangladesh 149 (Bumrah 4-50, Deep 2-19, Jadeja 2-19) by 308 runs.
