Man Accused of Shooting Dead A Family in Amethi Shot in Leg While Trying to Escape

Amethi: Chandan Verma, the prime accused in the shootout in Amethi in which four members of a family died on Thursday was shot in the leg by the police while he was trying to escape by snatching a cop’s pistol, claimed Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday.

Verma was arrested on Friday.

It is alleged that Verma along with some others shot dead a 35-year-old school teacher, Sunil, his wife Poonam (32), their daughter Drishti (6), and their one-year-old daughter on Thursday. The armed group barged into their home and opened fire on the victims.

This incident was linked to a case filed against Verma by the teacher’s wife in August. The police recovered the accused’s WhatsApp status, where he had posted an open threat to the family. Verma had written in his WhatsApp status, “Five people will die, I will show you soon.”

Poonam had lodged an FIR against Verma in Rae Bareli under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and for eve-teasing. She had mentioned that “if anything happens to her or her family,” Verma should be held responsible.
