‘The Hindu’ Journalist Mahesh Langa Arrested in GST Fraud Case

Ahmedabad: A senior journalist, Mahesh Langa, was arrested on Tuesday by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch in connection with an alleged GST-related fraud case. The operation led to the recovery of ₹20 lakh in cash, gold jewellery and land documents from Langa’s residence.

The arrest followed extensive raids conducted at 14 locations across Ahmedabad, Junagadh, Surat, Kheda and Bhavnagar, initiated after a complaint lodged by the Central GST department. Reports suggest that the crime branch uncovered information suggesting that over 200 counterfeit companies were engaged in fraudulent activities involving fake input tax credits. These firms reportedly utilized forged identities and documents to evade tax duties.

Further investigations revealed that the Central GST had discovered forged documentation linked to Langa’s wife and father, which was allegedly used in dubious transactions associated with these fake companies.

The crime branch stated, “Initial findings suggest a large-scale conspiracy aimed at defrauding the government of significant revenue, potentially amounting to crores of rupees, through fake billing, fraudulent documentation, and misrepresentation.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajit Rajian confirmed that Langa, who works for ‘The Hindu’ newspaper, was arrested following thorough questioning. Additionally, an FIR has been filed against multiple individuals and entities, including Dhruvi Enterprise, Om Construction, Raj Infra, Haresh Construction Company, and DA Enterprise, in relation to this case.
