Mumbai: Six people died and four others were critically injured in a horrific collision between two cars on the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, or Samruddhi Mahamarg, on Friday night near the Kadwanchi village in Jalna district of Maharashtra.

The accident occurred at around 11 pm when a Swift Dzire car entered the highway from the wrong side after refueling. It crashed to an Ertiga going to Mumbai from Nagpur.

After the collision, the Ertiga was flung into the air and landed on the barricade lining the highway. The passengers in it were flung out of the vehicle onto the road. The other car turned into a mangled heap of metal.

Six died on the spot. Police rushed to the spot as soon as they were informed of the accident. The injured have been referred to the district hospital for treatment.

The Samruddhi Mahamarg is a partially functional six-lane and 701-km-long access-controlled expressway in Maharashtra connecting Mumbai and Nagpur.
