New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has called for the resignation of Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal following her controversial comments about senior party leader Atishi, who has been announced as the next Chief Minister of Delhi.
AAP leader Dilip Pandey criticised Maliwal, accusing her of aligning with the BJP’s agenda despite being sent to the Rajya Sabha by AAP. “Swati Maliwal took a Rajya Sabha seat from AAP but follows BJP’s script. If she has any integrity, she should resign as an MP and contest on a BJP ticket,” said Pandey.
The demand for Maliwal’s resignation comes amid growing tensions between her and AAP, which escalated after she accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar of assaulting her at the CM’s residence.
Atishi’s appointment as Delhi’s Chief Minister, succeeding Arvind Kejriwal, who stepped down today, sparked a harsh response from Maliwal. She criticised the decision, claiming that Atishi’s parents had attempted to save terrorist Afzal Guru from execution.
“Today is a sad day for Delhi. A woman whose family fought to save terrorist Afzal Guru from being hanged is being made CM. Her parents petitioned the President for mercy for Guru,” Maliwal said in a video statement. She further accused Atishi of being a “dummy CM” and called the situation a threat to national security.
Atishi, currently Delhi’s Education Minister, has not yet responded to Maliwal’s comments.
