Bangladesh Police Employee Association Announces Indefinite Strike

Dhaka: The Bangladesh Police Subordinate Employees Association declared an indefinite strike for their safety, as reported by Bangla Tribune on Tuesday afternoon.

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, police stations across Bangladesh have been frequent targets of attacks, leading to heightened fear and insecurity among police personnel.

Recent days have seen several policemen killed during clashes with protesters demanding the government’s ousting. Vandalism and arson have plagued hundreds of police stations and establishments nationwide, including in Dhaka. On Monday, even police headquarters were set ablaze.

The resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has intensified incidents of ambushes, murders of policemen, and widespread vandalism.

According to the association’s press release, approximately 450 police stations have been attacked, resulting in numerous police fatalities linked to terrorist activities.

For the protection of its members, the association announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting today.

When approached for comments, several police headquarters officers declined. However, anonymous sources stressed that the Bangladesh Police operates under government directives, with limited scope for independent action. They acknowledged past wrongdoings by certain officers but stressed that this does not reflect the entire force.

A senior police official reiterated that the police act according to the government’s directives and will continue to do so under the next administration. He appealed to the public, urging them not to misunderstand the police, underlining their role as protectors and friends of the people.
