Bangladeshi Protesters Storm PM’s Residence, Vandalise Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Statue

Dhaka: Dhaka erupted in turmoil as thousands of demonstrators breached curfew and stormed into Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence on Monday following reports of her resignation and escape.

Crowds bearing flags filled Dhaka’s streets, with hundreds breaking through security barriers at the Prime Minister’s palace. Protesters also damaged a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina’s father and former President.

Despite heavy security measures, including armoured vehicles and barbed wire barricades, masses of protesters overwhelmed police and military forces. Local media estimates suggest up to 4,00,000 people joined the demonstrations.

The violence has escalated dramatically, with at least 98 deaths reported yesterday, including 14 law enforcement officers. This brings the death toll to approximately 300 since the unrest began in early July.

What started as protests against civil service quotas has transformed into widespread calls for the 76-year-old Prime Minister’s resignation, marking one of the most severe crises in Hasina’s 15-year tenure.
