Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has achieved a remarkable surplus of Rs 5,120 crore from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, according to the Economic Times.
This marks a 116% jump from the Rs 2,367 crore surplus recorded in IPL 2022. The BCCI’s total revenue from IPL 2023 reached Rs 11,769 crore, reflecting a 78% year-on-year growth. Concurrently, expenses rose by 66% to Rs 6,648 crore, as per the BCCI’s annual report for 2022-23.
The significant financial growth is largely attributed to new media rights and sponsorship deals. The media rights for the 2023-27 cycle were sold for a staggering Rs 48,390 crore, commencing with IPL 2023. Disney Star secured the IPL TV rights in 2021 for Rs 23,575 crore, while Jio Cinema acquired the digital rights for Rs 23,758 crore. Tata Sons purchased the IPL title rights for Rs 2,500 crore.
