New Delhi: The BJP and Congress have criticised Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation announcement, dismissing it as a publicity stunt aimed at salvaging his tarnished image.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari labelled it a “PR stunt,” stating that Kejriwal is aware his public image has shifted from being an anti-corruption crusader to one linked with corruption. Bhandari believes this resignation is an attempt to restore his standing among Delhi voters.
BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa also accused Kejriwal of not resigning out of sacrifice but due to a Supreme Court order, which prevents him from returning to the Chief Minister’s Office or signing official documents.
Sirsa further alleged that the two-day gap in the resignation process is being used by Kejriwal to persuade AAP MLAs to support his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, as the next Chief Minister.
Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit echoed similar sentiments, calling the resignation announcement a “mere gimmick.” He added that Kejriwal should have stepped down earlier, given the Supreme Court’s unprecedented restrictions on his access to the Chief Minister’s Office and involvement in official duties, indicating concerns about potential evidence tampering in the ongoing liquor policy case.
The Supreme Court granted Kejriwal bail on September 13 in the Delhi liquor policy case, but imposed conditions barring him from discussing the case and entering his office or the Delhi Secretariat.
