Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday. Ghosh is implicated in financial irregularities at the government-run hospital, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered last month.
Officials revealed that Ghosh was detained after two weeks of intensive interrogation by the CBI. He was also subjected to a polygraph test.
The CBI has charged him with criminal conspiracy, cheating and dishonesty, along with violations of Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, all of which are non-bailable and cognisable offences.
The investigation, initially handled by Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), was transferred to the CBI following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
Ghosh served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 to September 2023. Despite being transferred in October 2023, he unexpectedly resumed his role within a month and continued until the day of the trainee doctor’s brutal rape and murder inside the hospital’s seminar hall. The semi-naked body of the victim was discovered on August 9, triggering nationwide protests and violence across West Bengal.
Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder case.
