Chandrayaaan 3: Even With Engine Failure Vikarm Lander Will Make Soft Landing

New Delhi: Vikram lander of India’s third lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 is capable to make a soft landing on the surface of the Moon on August 23 even in case of engine failure, said ISRO chief S. Somanath on Tuesday.

Speaking on “Chandrayaan-3: Bharat’s Pride Space Mission” at a meeting organised by NGO Disha Bharat, he reiterated that the soft landing will be ensured even if all the sensors and two engines of Vikram fail to work.

But according to him, the biggest challenge is to make a horizontal Vikram land vertically on the lunar surface, he added.

After separating from the orbiter, Vikram Lander will move horizontally. It will be brought to a vertical stance to ensure a safe landing on Moon.

The ISRO had failed to get its lander touchdown safely on the Moon’s surface during the Chandrayaan-2 endeavour.
