Rising Mortality Claims 2-Month-Old Cheetah Cub at Kuno National Park

Bhopal: In unfortunate news, officials have reported the death of a cheetah cub at Kuno National Park. The park authorities confirmed on Tuesday that the number of young cubs in the park has decreased from four to three.

According to a forest officer from Kuno, the cause of the cub’s death is currently under investigation by the Forest department team. This incident comes after the recent demise of three other cheetahs within the National Park, which has sparked questions regarding the management and administration of Kuno.

Earlier this year in March, a female cheetah named Jwala, who was brought from Namibia, gave birth to four cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, released the eight cheetahs from Namibia into Kuno National Park as part of ‘Project Cheetah’ on his birthday last year, aiming to revitalize and diversify India’s wildlife and habitat.

India, once declared extinct of cheetahs in 1952, has undertaken the ambitious Project Cheetah, following the guidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This project involves reintroducing cheetahs into the wild, with additional cheetahs brought from South Africa and rehabilitated into Kuno National Park in February.

India’s rich history of wildlife conservation includes the successful ‘Project Tiger’ initiated in 1972, which has played a significant role in protecting tigers and maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.
