Kolkata: A Kolkata court lashed out at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after its lawyer and investigating officer failed to appear on time, delaying the bail hearing of Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The hearing commenced at 4:20 pm, with defence lawyer Kavita Sarkar presenting her arguments. However, the judge noted the absence of CBI lawyer Dipak Poria.
Expressing displeasure over the tardiness and absence of the CBI team, the magistrate remarked, “Should I grant bail to Sanjay Roy? This reflects a severely lethargic attitude by the CBI. It is very unfortunate.”
Poria eventually arrived 40 minutes late, after which the court rejected Roy’s bail plea. Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 and has been remanded to judicial custody until September 20.
The CBI also conducted a polygraph test on Roy at Presidency Jail in August.
Additionally, the CBI has registered a case concerning financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College, where the woman doctor was found dead on August 9.
Initially investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the West Bengal government, the case was handed over to the CBI following a Calcutta High Court directive.
