Odisha: Diphtheria Outbreak Spreads to Koraput, Kalahandi; Rayagada to Administer Booster Doses

Bhubaneswar: After an initial outbreak in Kashipur, Rayagada district, diphtheria has now spread to neighbouring Koraput and Kalahandi districts in Odisha, causing concern among health officials. A total of 21 cases of the bacterial infection have been reported across the three districts so far.

The outbreak has claimed five lives in the state. Rayagada district has reported the highest number of cases (15), followed by Kalahandi (4-5 suspected cases), and Koraput (1 critical case).

Anti-diphtheria serum is being administered to those infected. A World Health Organization (WHO) team, along with local health officials, is visiting affected villages. Public Health Director Nilakantha Mishra stated that surveillance is ongoing, with suspected cases in Kalahandi. The infection, attributed to strain changes or immunity deficiencies, is manageable with antibiotics. Vaccinations may be re-administered if necessary.

In response, the Health Department is initiating a booster dose campaign in Rayagada. Children under one year will receive the pentadose vaccine, while those aged 5 to 15 will receive the TD dose. Dr. Sanjukta Sahu, Director of the Family Welfare Department, confirmed that booster immunizations will proceed with guidance from stakeholders.

Health officials are urging the public to wear masks and remain vigilant to prevent further spread of diphtheria.
