Ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi’s 33rd Death Anniversary, Rahul, Sonia, Kharge, PM Modi Pay Tribute

New Delhi: On the occasion of the 33rd death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Tuesday, several dignitaries cutting across party lines paid their homage to the departed leader.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi through a post on X saying, “On his death anniversary, my tributes to our former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shared a post on the occasion and referred to his father’s dreams as his own.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi also paid homage to Rajiv Gandhi on his 33rd death anniversary at Veer Bhumi in Delhi on Tuesday morning. Other Congress leaders like P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot also paid their respects to the former prime minister.

After the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi took over the charge of the Congress in 1984 and became the youngest Prime Minister of India at the age of 40. He served as the Prime Minister of India till December 2, 1989. He was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.

He is remembered for ushering era of technological development and economic liberalization in India.
