Gautam Gambhir Interviewed By BCCI’s CAC, Set To Be Named India Coach Soon

Mumbai: Former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir was interviewed by the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Tuesday for the coveted position of the Indian national cricket team’s head coach.

The interview was conducted virtually over a Zoom call, attended virtually by both Gambhir and CAC members.

A BCCI source confirmed that the interview included initial discussions, with another round scheduled for the following day.

Gambhir appears to be the sole contender for the position, and his appointment is expected to be officially announced within the next 48 hours.

The specifics of Gambhir’s discussion with CAC chairman Ashok Malhotra and members Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik, based in Mumbai, have not been disclosed. The focus reportedly centred on Gambhir’s vision for the national team over the next three years, encompassing multiple ICC tournaments.

The BCCI’s Apex Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening will likely update members on the coach selection process before the final decision is made public.

Gambhir recently guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL trophy as the team’s mentor. He is set to take over from the current India coach, Rahul Dravid, who will step down after the team’s T20 World Cup campaign in the Americas.

The Indian team is currently in Barbados for the Super 8 matches of the T20 World Cup, having remained unbeaten in the group stage. They will face Afghanistan on June 20.
