Hathras: A religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras turned deadly on Tuesday after a stampede erupted among the massive crowd. The incident, which claimed the lives of 121 people, mostly women, is under investigation.
Authorities have arrested six individuals who served as volunteers (sevadars) during the event, while authorities are seeking the main organizer. The gathering attracted over 2,50,000 attendees.
The cause of the stampede remains disputed, with officials citing various triggers. Bhole Baba, whose real name is Suraj Pal Singh, has not been seen publicly since the event but issued a statement promising legal action against “anti-social elements.”
Authorities face questions about why the preacher wasn’t named in the initial FIR. The investigation is ongoing, with police stating they will question Bhole Baba if necessary. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site and met with injured survivors.
All victims’ bodies have been identified and handed over to their families. The state government has announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
