Varanasi: Four persons including a married couple were arrested in Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh for their involvement in a racket involved in the sale of minor girls’ eggs to childless couples at an IVF centre.
The gang was luring young girls of poor families through money to agree fro ovum donation. The racketeers were preparing fake documents and papers related to the age of the minor girls to prove that they were eligible for egg donation. The eggs collected from the minor girls were sold to a famous IVF centre in Varanasi for large sums of money.
The racket came to the fore when the mother of a 17-year-old girl from the Jaitpura area lodged a complaint about an illegal egg “donation” operation running at an IVF centre.
According to the complaint, the girl was promised Rs 30,000 but was paid only Rs 11,500. Her mother also alleged that she was kept in the dark about the entire process.
According to the norms prescribed for egg donation, a donor should be above 23 years of age and married with at least one child above three years of age. A woman can donate eggs only once in a lifetime.
