India secured a spot in the final of the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament in Hulunbuir, China, after a commanding 4-1 victory over South Korea in the semi-final on Monday. Captain Harmanpreet Singh led the charge with a brace, while Uttam Singh and Jermanpreet Singh each added a goal to continue India’s unbeaten run in the competition.
The team will face China in the final on Tuesday, September 17.
India displayed an enhanced ability to convert field goals, with Uttam and Jermanpreet capitalising on open play opportunities, while Harmanpreet remained clinical from penalty corners. The Indian side made 20 circle entries, four more than South Korea and dominated possession throughout the match.
Uttam Singh opened the scoring in the first quarter, deftly deflecting a cross from the left wing, putting early pressure on the South Korean defence. In the second quarter, Harmanpreet Singh doubled India’s lead by converting their second penalty corner of the game. Harmanpreet showcased improved drag-flicking skills, adding another goal in the final minute of the third quarter following a goalkeeping error from South Korea. Jermanpreet’s goal in the third quarter, a powerful strike off a long pass from the left, was the highlight of the match.
South Korea’s Yang Jihun managed to score in the third quarter, but the lower-ranked side failed to apply sustained pressure on India’s solid defence.
Earlier in the day, China stunned Pakistan in a thrilling semi-final. China, buoyed by a passionate home crowd on the Mooncake Festival holiday, dominated possession and created several early chances, derailing Pakistan’s hopes of making the final.
