India have advanced to the final of the Asia Cup, propelling them to the second spot in the ICC’s One Day International (ODI) rankings. This comes as Pakistan lost its No. 1 ranking after being eliminated from the tournament.
Under Babar Azam’s leadership, Pakistan faced consecutive defeats in the ‘Super Four,’ including a nail-biting loss to Sri Lanka on the last ball. Consequently, Pakistan slipped to the third position with 115 points in the latest ICC ranking update.
With 116 points, India is just two points behind Australia, who have now claimed the coveted No. 1 spot in the ODI rankings. The competition for the top position is heating up as both teams gear up for the upcoming World Cup, set to begin next month.
Adding to the excitement, India and Australia are scheduled to face off in a three-match ODI series in India, commencing on September 22. This series will serve as a prelude to their World Cup opener in Chennai on October 8.
Australia’s ascent to the No. 1 spot follows their recent victories in South Africa. However, their 111-run loss in the third ODI in Potchefstroom has provided India with an opportunity to challenge their top position.
The South Africa-Australia ODI series is nearing its conclusion, with the fourth match scheduled for Friday and the series finale on Sunday. Meanwhile, India is set to compete in the Asia Cup final against co-hosts Sri Lanka on Sunday.
