Kanpur: India’s openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal set a new world record for the fastest team fifty in Test cricket, achieving the feat on Day 4 of the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.
After dismissing Bangladesh for 233 in their first innings, India’s batters displayed aggressive intent from the start, smashing boundaries and sixes. They brought up the 50-run mark in just three overs, marking the first time in Test history that a team has scored 50 runs within three overs since the introduction of data collection.
The previous record for the fastest team fifty was held by England, who reached the milestone in 26 balls against the West Indies earlier this year at Trent Bridge. However, India eclipsed this by a wide margin, reaching their half-century in just 18 balls.
India’s previous fastest team fifty came in 2008 against England in Chennai, where they achieved the mark in 5.2 overs.

– 4.2 Overs – England vs West Indies, Nottingham, 2024

India didn’t stop at the 50-run mark, breaking another world record for the fastest team century in Test cricket, reaching 100 runs in just 61 balls (10.1 overs). The previous record of 12.2 overs, also held by India, was set against the West Indies in 2023.

India also went on to break the record for the fastest 150 in Test cricket history, achieving the score in 18.2 overs, surpassing their own previous best of 21.1 overs set against the West Indies in 2023.
The aggressive batting display highlighted India’s ability to adapt to different game situations. While England’s ‘Bazball’ approach has garnered attention for its attacking style in Test cricket, India’s performance against Bangladesh showed that they are equally capable of aggressive play when needed.
Earlier in the match, India bowled out Bangladesh for 233, with Mominul Haque remaining unbeaten on 107. Jasprit Bumrah (3/50) led India’s bowling attack, with Akash Deep, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Mohammed Siraj sharing six wickets. Ravindra Jadeja also achieved a personal milestone, completing 300 Test wickets.
