Indian Navy Demonstrates AatmaNirbharta With Successful BrahMos Missile Test Firing

New Delhi: The Indian Navy successfully test-fired a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile on Sunday using its frontline guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao. According to an official, the Indian Navy’s firepower at sea was on full display during the test.

The official lauded INS Mormugao for hitting “bull’s eye” with its maiden BrahMos supersonic cruise missile firing. It is the latest guided-missile destroyer to be used by the Indian Navy, and both the ship and its weapon are indigenous symbols of ‘AatmaNirbharta’ or self-reliance, the official added.

BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, an India-Russian joint venture, produces supersonic cruise missiles that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms. The missiles can fly at a speed of 2.8 Mach or almost three times the speed of sound. In fact, India exports BrahMos missiles, making it a lucrative sector for the country.

However, the location of the test-firing of the missile has not been disclosed.

It is worth noting that India signed a $375 million deal with the Philippines in January 2020, to supply three batteries of BrahMos missiles. The missiles are capable of hitting targets up to 290 kilometres away and can be used for both land attacks and anti-ship roles.
