New Delhi: Indian cricket administrator Jay Shah has been elected as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday. The 35-year-old will become the youngest person to hold the top position in global cricket.
Shah, who is also the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was the sole nominee for the role after the deadline for nominations passed. He will replace Greg Barclay, who decided not to seek a third term.
The ICC confirmed that elections would only be held if there were multiple candidates.
Shah’s election comes at a crucial time for cricket as the sport seeks to become more inclusive globally. He has been serving as the chair of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee.
“Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC),” the ICC said in a statement. “Shah, who has served as the BCCI Honorary Secretary since October 2019 and Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will assume this prestigious role on December 1, 2024.”
Shah will be the fifth Indian to lead the ICC, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
