Lioness Dies After Hit by Train in Gujarat, 3rd Big Cat Death in Rail Accident this Month

Ahmedabad: A lioness hit by a train at a forest in Gujarat’s Amreli district on January 20, died during treatment on Wednesday.

This is the third lion death in train accidents in Gujarat’s Amreli district in January 2024.

The latest victim lioness was injured after getting hit by a passenger train in Rajula taluka of Amreli district on January 20.

It was undergoing treatment at the Shakkarbaug zoo in Junagadh district where it died.

On January 3, another lioness was hit by a goods train in the Gir (East) forest division of Amreli. It also died during treatment at Shakkarbaug Zoo on January 11.

On January 12, a lion died after getting run over by a train near Amrutvel village in of Amreli district.

Following these big cat deaths in train accidents, the Gujarat state forest minister Mulu Bera issued directions to reduce the speed of trains passing through the wildlife areas and also increase the height of fencing along the railway tracks.
