FIR Filed Against Mahua Moitra Over Controversial Social Media Post on NCW Chief

New Delhi: A case has been filed against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra for allegedly outraging the modesty of National Commission for Women chief Rekha Sharma through a social media post.

The complaint, lodged by Sharma, led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) by the Delhi Police’s special cell under Section 79 of the new criminal law, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Moitra, the MP from Krishnanagar in West Bengal, commented on videos showing Sharma being assisted by someone with an umbrella during her visit to women injured in the Hathras stampede. This remark sparked controversy, prompting Moitra to delete the post later. The Delhi Police have requested further details from the platform where the post was made.

The National Commission for Women took note of the comment and urged for legal action against Ms. Moitra. Despite this, the Trinamool MP remained defiant. In response to the NCW’s statements on social media, she called on the Delhi Police to take immediate action and even indicated her location in Nadia, West Bengal, offering herself for arrest if required.

Moitra also brought up past controversial statements made by Sharma on social media, questioning the NCW chief’s consistency in her remarks.
