Mexico Elects Its 1st Woman President Claudia Sheinbaum

With a landslide electoral win, Claudia Sheinbaum will make history as Mexico’s first woman president.

Crowds of flag-waving supporters danced mariachi music in Mexico City’s main square to celebrate the ruling party candidate’s victory.

“I want to thank millions of Mexican women and men who decided to vote for us on this historic day. I won’t fail you,” said 61-year-old Sheinbaum in a victory speech.

Sheinbaum is a scientist by training. According to preliminary official results, she won around 58-60 per cent of votes.

Thousands of troops were deployed to protect voters, following a particularly bloody electoral process that has seen more than two dozen aspiring local politicians murdered.

Sheinbaum has pledged to continue the outgoing president’s controversial “hugs not bullets” strategy of tackling crime at its roots.
