VIDEO: 8 Dead, 60 Injured as Billboard Collapses Amid Dust Storm in Mumbai

Mumbai: A massive billboard toppled over a fuel station in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar during a powerful dust storm on Monday evening, leaving at least eight dead and over 60 persons trapped under the debris.

The incident occurred as the fierce storm swept through the city, causing widespread destruction. Visuals showed the billboard structure crashing onto the gas station, its metal frame piercing the roofs of several cars.

Emergency personnel, including teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are on-site engaged in a search and rescue operation for survivors. Authorities have ordered an investigation into the cause of the billboard collapse.

The dust storm brought Mumbai to a standstill, crippling transportation and causing power outages across multiple districts. Local trains, a section of the metro network, and even flights at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were temporarily halted due to low visibility and strong winds.

The storm’s impact on infrastructure was significant. Metro services were suspended between Aarey and Andheri East after a billboard entangled with overhead wires. Suburban trains were also affected after an overhead equipment pole bent under the strong winds.

While the dust storm provided some relief from the scorching heat, it was followed by unseasonal rain, leading to power cuts in Thane’s Kalwa and surrounding areas. Several trees were also uprooted across the city.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “nowcast warning” for Thane, Palghar and Mumbai, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate to heavy rain.
