Kolkata: The former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh is facing the prospect of imminent arrest following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against him. Ghosh, who has been under intense scrutiny due to the tragic rape-murder of a trainee doctor on the hospital premises, has not been directly implicated in the criminal case. However, the corruption charges levelled against him, which are non-bailable, could lead to his detention.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the investigation into the corruption allegations on Saturday, acting on the orders of the Calcutta High Court. The probe was initiated after former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, Akhtar Ali filed a complaint accusing Ghosh of various financial irregularities. The rape-murder case, which sparked widespread public outrage, added urgency to the investigation.
Ali’s allegations against Ghosh include illegal sale of unclaimed bodies, trafficking of biomedical waste and rigging of tenders for medicine and medical equipment supplies. He also claimed that students were pressured to pay hefty sums to pass exams.
The CBI conducted a thorough search of Ghosh’s residence yesterday, resulting in the discovery of significant evidence related to the alleged corruption. Ghosh has been questioned by the investigating agency for several days and has even undergone a polygraph test.
