Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Friday decided to shift the day for the Odisha Assembly Speaker election to September 22 instead of September 21.
According to sources, this change in election date was made because of Nuakhai celebrations. Now the election to the post of Speaker of the Odisha Assembly will begin at 9:30 am on September 22.
Earlier the MLAs of the BJP and Congress had declared to boycott the election for the post of Odisha Assembly Speaker scheduled to be held on September 21.
They alleged that the decision to hold the election of the assembly speaker coincides with Nuakhai, a major festival of western Odisha, hinted at the step-motherly attitude of the BJD government towards western Odisha districts.
Western Odisha will celebrate Nuakhai on September 20 and 21 for two days.
The post of Odisha Assembly Speaker became vacant when former Speaker Bikram Keshari Arukha resigned from the post on May 12.
