Odisha Governor Dissolves State Legislative Assembly Following Cabinet Recommendation

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Raghubar Das dissolved the state’s Legislative Assembly on Monday, acting on the advice of the Cabinet.

The decision came after a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, where the Cabinet recommended the dissolution until the formation of a newly-elected legislature.

The Department of Parliamentary Affairs issued a formal notification, signed by the Chief Secretary, stating, “In exercise of the power conferred upon me by Clause 121 (b) of Article-174 of the Constitution of India, I hereby order that the Odisha Legislative Assembly constituted vide Notification No 308/OR-LA/2019 dated 25 May 2019 Of Election Commission of India, shall stand dissolved with effect from the date a newly elected Legislature is constituted by the Election Commission of India.”

The decision of the state cabinet to recommend the dissolution of the Assembly and declare the end of the present government’s tenure is a formality before the declaration of election results as per the provisions in the Constitution.
