Odisha SRC Issues Public Advisory as Searing Heatwave Grips State

Bhubaneswar: The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) office on Friday issued an advisory for residents of Odisha to stay vigilant due to the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of continuing heatwave conditions over the next five days.

According to the IMD, 19 locations in Odisha, including Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Titilagarh, and Angul, have recorded daytime temperatures exceeding 40°C. The heatwave is expected to persist, posing significant health risks.

The SRC reported five confirmed sunstroke fatalities, with one death each in Balasore, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, and Bolangir. Additionally, 12 suspected sunstroke deaths in Sundargarh and six in Jharsuguda are under investigation, with post-mortem examinations being conducted to determine the exact causes.

SRC Heatwave Advisory:

– Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid going outside between 11 AM and 3 PM when temperatures peak.
– Prevent Heat Exposure: Minimize time spent in direct sunlight.
– Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, light-coloured clothing.
– Stay Hydrated: Drink ORS solutions and homemade drinks like lassi, sugarcane juice, lemon water and buttermilk.
– Seek Shade: Stay indoors or in shaded areas during peak heat hours.
