Paris: India will face Germany in the men’s hockey semi-final at the Paris Olympics 2024 at the Yves-du-Manoir stadium on Tuesday. This eagerly awaited match is a repeat of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 bronze medal game, where India triumphed over Germany in a nail-biting 5-4 victory.
Both teams reached the semi-finals with impressive quarter-final performances, as Germany defeated Argentina and India overcame Great Britain. The historic rivalry between these hockey powerhouses dates back to the 1930s, highlighted by India’s 8-1 victory over Germany in the 1936 Berlin Olympics final to clinch their third consecutive gold medal.
In their 106 international encounters, Germany leads with 53 wins, India has 26 victories, and 27 matches have ended in draws. Recently, India has dominated, winning seven of their last eight meetings, although Germany secured victory in their most recent clash.
Germany’s captain Mats Grambusch, who returned from injury in the quarter-final, will play a crucial role despite facing disciplinary challenges. Their attacking lineup, featuring Christopher Ruhr with four goals, and Gonzalo Peillat and Niklas Wellan with three goals each, has been prolific.
India’s defence has been a standout in Paris 2024, and their captain Harmanpreet Singh is the joint top-scorer with seven goals. However, they will miss Amit Rohidas, who is suspended following a red card in the quarter-final against Great Britain, a match India won after a tense penalty shootout.
