Paris: Indian para-badminton star Nitesh Kumar secured a historic gold medal in the men’s singles SL3 event at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The victory, achieved at the La Chapelle Arena on Monday, marked India’s second gold medal of the ongoing games.
Kumar, the top seed in the tournament, faced a tough challenge from Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell, the second seed. In a thrilling three-set final, Kumar prevailed 21-14, 18-21, 23-21.
The SL3 category is designed for players with moderately restricted movement in one or both limbs or the absence of limbs. The game is played on a half-width court, allowing for a wider range of shots.
Kumar and Bethell engaged in long rallies throughout the match, reflecting the nature of the SL3 category. Kumar seized control in the first set, winning 21-14. The second set was more competitive, but Kumar ultimately fell short, forcing a deciding set.
With a 19-16 lead in the final set, Kumar appeared poised to clinch the gold. However, Bethell fought back, making the match a tense affair. In the end, Kumar’s determination and skill prevailed, securing India’s second gold medal at the Paralympics.
