Parliament Session Begins; PM Modi Sworn in As MP by Pro-Term Speaker Mahtab

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in as a Member of Parliament for the third time as the inaugural session of the 18th Lok Sabha started on Monday, June 24. Several newly elected MPs also took oath during the first sitting of Parliament after the Lok Sabha polls.

BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab was first administered the oath as the Pro-Tem Speaker by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He then called upon the Prime Minister to take oath as a member of the House. About 280 newly-elected MPs are taking oath on Monday. The remaining 260 Lok Sabha MPs including Rahul Gandhi will take oath on Tuesday.

The Lok Sabha Speaker will be elected on June 26. The Pro-Tem Speaker will conduct the election for the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to announce the new Speaker’s name on Wednesday.

President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on June 27.
