PM Modi & Ukraine Prez Zeleskyy May Hold their 1st Meeting After Russian Invasion at G7 Summit

On the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may have their first meeting after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February last year. Senior diplomats of India and Ukraine are exploring the possibility of a bilateral meeting between the two.

PM Modi left for Japan on Friday morning to attend three sessions at the G7 summit. He will also visit Papua New Guinea and Australia.

He will hold bilateral meetings with a number of global leaders, including Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio.

There is a possibility of a meeting between Modi and Zelenskyy on Saturday. But it has not been confirmed yet.

The Ukrainian President is attending the summit following an invitation by Japan, the current chair of the G7.

Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova visited India last month and she handed over a letter written to Modi by Zelenskyy to Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi.

Since the Ukraine conflict began, Modi spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin as well as Zelenskyy a number of times.

But India has not yet condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. India continues to state that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.
