Bhubaneswar: The body of a male elephant named Ramu, aged between 35-40 years, was found near a trench being dug by the forest department in the Chunakoli area in Chandaka forest on Monday on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
The elephant allegedly died of electrocution.
According to sources, this elephant was a terror in the Chandaka area for years. It was damaging crops and houses at Bharatpur, Andharua, Malim Road, Malipada, Shamapur, Gothapatana areas on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, sources said.
Locals allege that the pachyderm came in contact with the live wire fence of the forest department installed to prevent wild animals from straying into the area where a trench was being dug. Ramu’s body was recovered with signs of electrocution on his trunk and leg.
Forest department has initiated an investigation to determine the reason behind Ramu’s death. A post-mortem of its corpse was conducted with the help of a team of doctors from the Nandankanan Zoological Park.
