New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday formed a committee led by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Justice Nawab Singh, to address the grievances of farmers protesting at the Shambhu border.
This decision was made by a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, with instructions for the committee to hold its first meeting within a week.
The court stated that the farmers’ concerns should be handled without political influence and resolved in a phased manner. It also granted farmers the freedom to relocate their peaceful protests to alternative sites.
This development arose during the hearing of a plea from the Haryana government, which challenged a high court order directing the removal of barricades at the Shambhu border, where farmers have been protesting since February 13.
The barricades were installed on the Ambala-New Delhi highway after farmer groups, including the ‘Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political)’ and ‘Kisan Mazdoor Morcha,’ announced a march to Delhi demanding a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops.
