Secularism ‘Not an Indian Concept’: Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi Sparks Political Firestorm

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has ignited controversy with his remarks on secularism, prompting strong backlash from Congress and other political leaders. Speaking at an event in Kanniyakumari, he claimed that secularism is a Western concept that lacks relevance in India, stating, “A lot of frauds have been committed on the people of this country, and one of them is the misinterpretation of secularism.”

Ravi elaborated, saying secularism arose from historical conflicts in Europe between church and state, asserting, “In India, there is no need for secularism.” His comments raised questions about whether he advocates for a theocratic model.

Brinda Karat, leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), criticized the Governor’s remarks as “perplexing,” suggesting they undermine the value of the Constitution. “It seems he believes the Constitution is also a foreign concept,” she added, implying that the current BJP-led government is appointing Governors who do not respect the nation’s foundational legal document.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore also condemned Ravi’s statements, highlighting that in India, secularism involves respecting all religions and traditions, which he believes reflects the country’s unique understanding of the concept.

Tensions between Governors and state leaders are not uncommon, as seen in Kerala, Delhi and West Bengal, where friction has surfaced between Governors and Chief Ministers.
