Tamil Nadu Spurious Liquor Death Toll Reaches 61, Over 118 Under Treatment

Chennai: The total number of deaths due to the consumption of spurious liquor in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district has increased to 61.

According to reports, at least 118 people are under treatment at different hospitals after the hooch tragedy that sparked off in Karunapuram village on June 18.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took a suo moto cognisance and issued notices to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and the Director-General of state police, seeking a detailed report on the spurious liquor deaths within a week.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo moto cognisance of the deaths of six women in the hooch tragedy. The NCW has formed a three-member committee to inquire into the matter.
