Second Arrest Made in West Bengal Public Flogging Case

Kolkata: Police on Wednesday arrested a second man alleged to be involved in the public flogging of a couple in Chopra, located in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district.

Amirul Islam, alias Badhua, was apprehended near the state’s border with Bangladesh by officers from the Islampur police station.

Islam, a resident of Ghirnar village in Chopra, was identified in a video that captured Tajmul Islam, alias ‘JCB’, violently caning the couple. The victims were reportedly punished by a kangaroo court for an alleged extramarital affair.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we are working to identify and arrest the remaining suspects. Amirul was seen alongside the primary accused, JCB, in the video,” said a police officer.

The police initiated a suo motu case on Sunday after the video of the incident, which occurred on Friday, went viral on social media, inciting widespread outrage. The authenticity of the video, however, remains uncertain.

Tajmul Islam, who is seen in the video beating the couple with a bamboo stick and claims to be a local TMC leader, was arrested on Sunday.
