What Will be Fate of Old Parliament Building in Future?

New Delhi: With the inauguration of the new parliament building by PM Modi on May 28, the old iconic parliament building will no more be in use for the purpose it was built. Now the question arises, what will happen to the old parliament building?

The old parliament was independent India’s first parliament, where historic events including the adoption of the constitution occurred. It witnessed a number of historic debates, transfer of power and formulation of major laws.

The old parliament building is considered an icon of India’s democratic spirit. It was designed by the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. Its construction started in 1921 and was completed in 1927.

In March 2021 union housing and urban affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told the Rajya Sabha that once the new building is ready, the existing one would have to be repaired and made available for alternate use, but no comprehensive thought has been given to it.

According to the sources, the old building will not be demolished but conserved as an archaeological asset.

There are some reports that say that the old parliament building may be converted into a museum for the common public to experience how the country was governed.
