Chinese Man Poses as Doctor, Scams Girlfriend of ₹3 Crore; Sentenced to 11 Years

A man in China has been sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison for defrauding his girlfriend of approximately ₹3 crore by impersonating a doctor at a prestigious hospital.

The man, identified as Zhang, originally employed at a hotel, deceived his girlfriend, Huang, whom he met in 2016 while she worked at a shopping mall. Over their six-year relationship, Zhang portrayed himself as an obstetrician-gynaecologist at a renowned Shanghai hospital, falsely claiming to have graduated from a prestigious medical college in China.

Zhang’s deception escalated in November 2016 when he developed a gambling addiction and started accumulating debts. He convinced Huang to invest in a nonexistent home and used the money for gambling and debt repayment. Despite suspicions arising from Zhang’s evasiveness about hospital visits, Huang never questioned his false identity until his failure to repay the money caused her family to investigate. They discovered Zhang had never worked at the hospital.

During the trial, the prosecutor highlighted the cautionary tale of trust and deception, stating, “While love is beautiful, one must also be wary of sweet traps.” The case gained significant attention on social media, where many sympathized with Huang’s plight, lamenting that she had been blinded by love.
