Kangaroo Court Tonsures Woman for Fighting with Husband in Jharsuguda Dist

Jharsuguda: Police arrested four persons in Jharsuguda district on Sunday for allegedly ostracizing a 45-year-old woman and tonsuring her head on the diktat of a kangaroo court.

The woman was allegedly punished by the kangaroo court for hitting her husband during a fight between the couple. The arrested persons included the husband of the victim. Police took action after the victim’s son lodged a complaint.

This inhuman incident took place at Raut Bahal village in Jharsuguda district on August 9. It came to the fore only after the son of the victim, Niranjan Kisan, who works in Tamil Nadu, reached the village and lodged a complaint with the police on Saturday.

According to reports, on August 8, the victim had a quarrel with her husband and during the heated argument she hit her husband accidentally while trying to oppose him.

Enraged by it, the husband approached the elders of the villages to call up a meeting punish his wife. The village

elders called a meeting at the kangaroo court that passed an order to ostracise the woman and tonsure her head. It also ordered the victim to give a mutton feast and also pay a fine of Rs 5,000.

At the directive of the kangaroo court, the woman was tonsured. She was also forced to give a mutton feast to the members of the kangaroo court.

Hearing about the incident, her son rushed to the village from Tamil Nadu. Enraged by the incident, he took his mother to the Laikera police station on August 24 to lodge a complaint against the kangaroo Court members.

The police swung into action and arrested four persons, including the husband of the victim. An investigation is on.
